Frequently Asked Questions

Bedding

What thread count do you do?

All of our bedding is made from 100% organic, long staple cotton in a 300 thread count weave. This is our magic formula for creating bedding that is genuinely luxurious, but also durable and easy to wash and iron.

The only thing you have to choose is which colour and style trim you like!

What is thread count?

Firstly- it is important to know that thread count is not the most important to look for when buying sheets.

Thread count simply measures the number of threads woven into each square inch. For example, 300 thread count comprises 150 vertical and 150 horizontal threads.

At some point, it becomes difficult to fit anymore in. So, as a marketing ploy, companies might create their long threads by twisting shorter, poor quality fibres together. Check out our blog for more information.

Are your sheets sateen or percale?

Cotton sheets can we woven using several different methods (i.e. how the threads are interlaced). All of our sheets are sateen weave, which creates a really silky and smooth feeling. We love the sateen weave because it feels so luxurious, and yet they really durable and easy to wash and iron too. Keep an eye out for our upcoming blog on the different types of weaves and finishes for bedding.

How deep are your fitted sheets?

All of our fitted sheets are a generous depth of 42cm (deeper than any other brand). This means they fit even the deepest of mattresses with mattress toppers. If you have a thinner mattress, they will also fit, as the elastic runs the entire perimeter of the sheets- you will just tuck it right under the mattress to fit.

Does the flat sheet have a line of cord?

Our flat sheets are entirely plain white with no cord or trim. Flat sheets can be used on their own or with a waffle bedspread in hot climates. In standard weather, you can put a duvet and duvet cover over the flat sheet. Simply fold the flat sheet over the duvet cover a few centimetres from the top and you will then have your bed made up beautifully with the trim of the duvet cover running horizontally.

We love multi-purpose products and believe in investing in products that you can mix and match around the house. You can have duvet sets with different colour trims for each different bedroom in the house and then a number of flat sheets and fitted sheets that can be interchanged.

How does the line of cord go across the duvet cover?

Our line of cord goes horizontally across the top of the duvet cover.

Do you only do white sheets?

At the moment our range consists entirely of white sheets, as we just love how white never goes out of fashion and can be mixed with any type of décor. However, keep an eye on our news as we will certainly look at adding more colours in the future. Sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop.

What size pillowcases come in a duvet set?

Our duvet sets come with two regular 50 x 75cm pillowcases. You can add King pillowcases (50 x 90cm) separately.

How do I measure my bed?

If buying a duvet set, please measure the size of your duvet from left to right, as some people may have larger or smaller duvets in comparison to their mattress size.

For fitted and flat sheets, simply measure the mattress from left to right, and the depth if you wish.

Size Chart

I am buying from outside of Ireland and the UK, are my beds/duvets/pillows different sizes?

Yes! Standard measurements differ depending on where in the world you buy them. Please check out our dimensions and see if they match yours. Very often they are the same measurements but different size names from country to country.

Do you do entirely plain duvet sets without an oxford edge?

We do indeed! You can shop our plain duvet sets under the title Plain Duvet Sets.

Do your duvet covers have an oxford edge?

No, our oxford duvet sets have the oxford edge around the pillowcases, but not the duvet cover. We feel it looks neater and is easier to look after without an edge on the duvet cover.

Looking After Your Bedding

How should I wash my sheets?

We recommend a 30-40 degree wash as this is more environmentally friendly, and ensures you will get the longest lifespan out of your sheets. However, they will endure a 60 degree wash if required. Our sheets are very durable and will even get softer as you wash them over time. We recommend a plant-based, non-toxic detergent such as Lilly’s or Ecover. Keep an eye out for our blog post on detergents!

Are your sheets easy to iron?

Yes, White & Green sheets iron like a dream! We use only the finest handpicked, organic cotton in a 300 thread count weave, which makes them easy to iron…really! If you use a tumble dryer, make sure that you take your sheets out before they are bone dry. Take them out ever so slightly damp, fold them and give a sweep of the iron on either side for the more efficient method of ironing!

Beware of “no-iron” or “wrinkle-resistant” sheets, these are usually the result of a formaldehyde resin bath. Keep an eye out for our upcoming blog post on this!

Will my sheets crease?

Unlike other bedding brands, we do not artificially treat our fabrics with silicon, formaldehyde or toxic chemicals to make them “no-iron or no-crease”. By choosing us, you’re experiencing the fabric in its purest form and natural fibres do crease. But don’t worry, our sheets are really easy to wash and iron. All of our customers say that they love White & Green sheets as for once, there is no issue with washing, ironing or getting rid of creasing, unlike the brands they had used in the past!

Will my sheets shrink?

We make all of our sheets 3% bigger as cotton naturally shrinks by 3% in the first wash. We prefer to be generous in size rather than have sheets that are too small and popping off mattresses! For example, our fitted sheets are 42cm deep with an elastic band the entire way around the bottom, which means they will fit every mattress, even if you have a mattress topper. After all, there is nothing worse than a tug of war with your sheet and mattress!

Does that mean I need to wash my sheets before using them?

As our bed sheets are all certified organic, there are no toxic chemicals or finishes on them, so you do not have to wash them before use.

What should or shouldn’t I do in washing my bed sheets?

Do:

  • Machine wash on a 30 to 40 degree wash using mild, and natural detergent.
  • Wash similar items together – same colour and fabric.
  • Tumble dry low. We recommend always taking them out of the dryer a little bit damp to help with creasing.

Don’t:

  • Do not use harsh chemically-infused detergents.
  • Don’t wash with clothing – zippers, hooks, etc. cause abrasion.
  • Avoid products containing benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxy acids and chlorine bleach.
  • Tumble dry until bone dry.

Can I put my sheets in the washing machine?

Absolutely. We recommend a regular 30-40 degree wash but they can be washed up to 60 degrees if needed.

Can I put my silk pillowcase in the washing machine?

Yes, we recommend a 30 degree gentle wash.

Can I tumble dry my sheets?

Our sheets can certainly be tumble dried, we recommend taking them out a little before bone dry.

Can I tumble dry my silk pillowcase?

We recommend not to tumble dry your silk pillowcase, line dry is fine.

What temperature should I wash my cotton sheets at?

30-40 degree regular wash, but they can take 60 degrees occasionally.

What temperature should I wash my silk pillowcase at?

30 degree cold/ gentle wash.

Is it okay to use fabric softener?

Yes, we would always recommend to use natural washing detergent and softeners.

Can I iron my cotton sheets? Are they easy to iron?

Our sheets are a dream to iron, if you are not an ironer just leave the sheets to line dry and any minor creases will fall out naturally.

A button has come off my duvet cover, how do I replace it?

Please email us at info@whiteandgreen.ie and we can send you out replacements.

There is a bad stain on my sheets, how do I remove it?

For severe stains such as blood- soak the stain in cold water (not hot-hot will actually set the stain) and then wash as normally. You can treat the stain with a stain remover after you have rinsed in cold water.

My sheet has become damaged in the wash, how do I replace it?

Unfortunately, if the damage was done by your washing machine or by a member of your household we cannot accept returns for this reason. If you need further assistance you can email us at info@whiteandgreen.ie / orders@whiteandgreen.ie

Knitted Products

Can you wash the throws and baby blankets?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, all of our products become softer and softer the more you wash them!

What size are the scarves?

Our scarves are 74 x 184cm, which is very generous in size and yet they are not heavy. There is something magic about our scarves in that they instantly make you feel safe and cosy when you put them on. They are a perfect weight to stay on wrapped as a shawl as you move around and they also double up as a blanket for travelling on planes or trains. We cannot go anywhere without them now!

What size waffle bedspread should I buy?

Our waffle bedspreads come in 3 sizes- Double, King and Superking and will cover the mattress on either side. However, if you prefer a neater look with minimal fabric on either side you could go down a size.

Will the throws fit my bed?

Our standard size throw fits nicely over the end of a King size bed. If you have a larger bed, or would like the throw to cover the entire duvet cover, we recommend the Large Herringbone Throws or the Waffle Bedspread.

What are the throws made of?

All of our products are 100% Organic cotton. This means they are really, really soft and cosy, but also machine-washable.
